Kino plays professional camera and post-production formats directly in the browser, on decoders we built ourselves. The files your camera or Avid workflow produces play as-is. There is no transcode step before you can work.

Codecs

CodecSupport
Apple ProResEvery variant: 422 Proxy, 422 LT, 422, 422 HQ, 4444, and 4444 XQ, including alpha in the 4444 family
Avid DNxHD / DNxHRAll common profiles, including Avid’s private-label variants
Blackmagic RAWAll compression settings, constant bitrate and constant quality
H.264 / HEVCThrough the browser’s built-in decoders, including when wrapped in MXF
Motion JPEGLegacy camera and archive footage
Scrubbing stays fast even on 6K RAW, all in the browser.

Containers

A container is not a codec: MXF is a wrapper, and DNxHD is one of the things you find inside it. Kino handles both layers.
ContainerSupport
MXFOP1a and OP-Atom — the per-track flavor Avid Media Composer writes and almost nothing else reads — with frame- and clip-wrapped essence and Avid’s private essence keys. Carries DNxHD/DNxHR, ProRes, H.264, and HEVC video with PCM (AES3/Wave) audio
QuickTime (.mov)ProRes, DNx, Motion JPEG, H.264, HEVC
Blackmagic RAW (.braw)BRAW clips exactly as the camera writes them
Consumer containers (MP4, MKV, WebM, MPEG-TS, the MPEG program stream family) plus all audio and image formats are listed in What formats does Kino support?
